Vasco da Gama won their first Copa do Brasil after beating Coritiba on the away goals rule, following a 3-3 aggregate draw over two legs.Vasco took a 1-0 lead into Wednesday’s return match at the Estadio Couto Pereira and claimed the trophy despite losing the second leg.
The visitors went ahead on 12 minutes through striker Alecsandro, who previously scored the only goal of the first leg.
Rosimar Amancio – on loan from Corinthians – levelled for Coritiba after half an hour, and attacking midfielder Davi made it 2-1 for the hosts just before the break.
Striker Eder Luis pulled one back for Vasco, before Willian made it 3-2 in the match and 3-3 on aggregate.
Coritiba were now within a goal of victory in the tie, but Vasco held on in the final 25 minutes to secure the first Copa do Brasil crown of their 113-year history.
The win gives Vasco a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores.
