Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Tyrick Mitchell to north London in the summer transfer window.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claimed that Spurs – along with Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle United – are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the Crystal Palace left-back ahead of a potential move for the 22-year-old at the end of the season.
However, the report added that Palace will unlikely be willing to part with the defender for anything other than an offer Patrick Vieira simply cannot refuse – such as the £50m that Manchester United paid to the south London side for Aaron Wan-Bissaka back in 2019 – while Mitchell himself is believed to be happy at Selhurst Park.
Conte can axe Reguilon with Mitchell
Considering the sheer amount of potential Mitchell quite clearly has, and that Sergio Reguilon has disappointed on the left of Tottenham’s backline this season and been heavily linked with an exit from north London this summer, it is not difficult to see why Antonio Conte would be interested in a move for the 22-year-old.
Indeed, according to FBRef, the left-footed Palace starlet currently ranks in the top 1% of full-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for pressures per 90, along with the top 5% for tackles, the top 14% for interceptions, the top 11% for blocks and the top 17% for clearances over the last 365 days.
The £17m-rated defender has also impressed over his 29 Premier League outings this season, helping his side to keep eight clean sheets, providing two assists and creating two big chances for his team-mates. He has also averaged 1.2 interceptions, 3.1 tackles, 2.6 clearances and 4.8 successful duels per game.
These returns have seen the £25k-per-week dynamo average a SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Vieira’s seventh-best player in the English top flight this term.
Furthermore, it would appear that the 22-year-old is an extremely popular figure in the Selhurst Park dressing room, with former Palace manager Roy Hodgson stating of Mitchell last year: “He’s popular basically for the right reasons: he works hard, trains hard, always does his job, listens to what he’s being told and does what’s asked of him. He never shirks any aspects of the game: getting forward to support, running back, blocking crosses to defend.
“That’s what we want from our players and from our left-back. If you do it and do it as well as he does, you’re going to be a popular figure. He shows the players around him, his teammates: ‘Trust me, because with me in your team you’re going to win.'”
As such, with Reguilon – who Jonathan Woodgate dubbed “horrendous” earlier this season – being linked with a £33.5m move back to Spain this summer, it would appear a wise move for Conte to wave goodbye to the 25-year-old at the end of the current campaign, before reinvesting the funds received from his sale into a move for the south London sensation. Mitchell would appear to be a huge upgrade on the Spanish international.
