Former Wales striker Dean Saunders believes that Liverpool should enter the race for in-demand Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud.
The Frenchman’s future at the Emirates is shrouded in doubt following the £52m arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, who scored on his debut in Thursday’s pre-season friendly against Sydney FC.
Giroud struggled for game time last season, starting just 11 Premier League matches, and his chances look even more slim for the upcoming campaign.
Everton, West Ham United, Borussia Dortmund and Marseille have all been named in the transfer gossip pages as interested parties, but Saunders thinks that Liverpool should also enter the mix.
Jurgen Klopp has a wealth of attacking talent in his squad, and he strengthened that with the acquisition of Mohamed Salah from Roma.
However, Saunders believes that they need a figure who can play in the box and get on the end of crosses.
He told talkSPORT:
“I think Giroud could play for Liverpool. Liverpool’s current front three float around, they just play anywhere, but against the lesser teams who they struggle to break down, I just think sometimes you could do with a player in the box like Giroud.
“You need a striker that, when you get stuck, you just toss it in there and he turns it into a goal – Giroud does that. He’s a top, top player and I think he’d be a good signing for Liverpool.”
In his five seasons at Arsenal, Giroud has found the back of the net 69 times in the Premier League.
In the 2016-17 campaign, he netted 12 goals and produced three assists in the top flight.
