As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers have agreed a deal to let 15 year old talent Billy Gilmour join Chelsea.
What’s the story?
It’s more important than ever for Scottish clubs to hold on to their home grown talent given the difference in transfer fees between the Scottish Premiership and elsewhere has never been greater.
However, it’s also important to maximise your assets and in the case of Billy Gilmour, it appears Rangers are doing just that.
According to The Scottish Sun, if Rangers agree the deal now then they get £500,000 compared to a sum of less than a third of that if he moves at the age of 16 in the summer.
If the Gers were to refuse the deal and try to convince the young midfielder to stay, they could only receive £150,000 compensation money for the switch.
With resources limited at the club, it’s clear to see why they are agreeing to such a deal.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Managing Director Stewart Robertson said:
We have a position agreed if Billy was to go. It would be negligent of us not to have done that. We need to protect our position and do the sensible thing, because if he goes in the summer without a deal being agreed then he leaves for a compensation amount. That would be a helluva lot less than if we had a fee agreed beforehand.
It appears as though the club are about to say goodbye to one of their brightest prospects and supporters will be hoping the Ibrox side are more vigilant of bigger clubs coming in for their talent in the future.
